It’s a New Year

With the coming of the new year, we took a week, closed the store and gave ourselves a new look. There was squabbling and disagreements but when it was all finished we all like what we have done. However, after a month into this new look we are still trying to find where we put things. Fabric got consolidated and we brought in some displays and took out a carload of shelves. You’ll have to come by and see what you think. We’ve gotten alot of thumbs ups. Not only do we have a new look we have started some new classes. Our first venture into Open Sew went over well. Our version is called $5 Friday and will be held the 3rd Friday each month and we plan to have some sort of demo each month. January we had a demo on 1/2 square triangles and February will be on machine binding. We already have 4-5 people signed up for February, so if you are interested in joining us give a call soon. Our Sunday Glamour Scarf class went very well, also. Jody will be back to put on another class in a couple of months. This Saturday we will have a Make and Take class where you’ll learn to make a quick paper pieced special occasion card and with Saturday brings our second annual Chocolate Walk. We’ve got our chocolate goodies ready to go and get you thinking about your special someone on February 14th. We had some ideas for you so stop in and check us out.

Things are a hoppin’

It’s Shop Hop weekend and we’ve been buzy little bees putting together some quick and easy tablerunner kits and some more of our in house pattern quilt kits and they seem to be a hit. We’ve had lots of hoppers, more than expected, which is nice to have happen. I’ll have to make some more block kits tonight as I only have 99 left and I hope we have more than that come in tomorrow.

The weather has finally cooperated. It has started out cool in the mornings but by the afternoon the sun is out and it’s been getting pretty warm. One of our customers, Becky Cureen, brought in 4 of her Shop Hop quilts, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, for us to display. They are hanging in the windows of the 2 empty spaces of our building. She has done a lot of nice work. I hope people are seen them as they run in and out of the store. Thanks, Becky.

We’ve got two more hours to go for tonight with over 300 hoppers so far today. We go until 8pm. Tomorrow we go from 10 am to 5 pm so I will get to sleep in. Yeah!

February Already!?!

My UPS guy told me last week, “ January is almost over. Next thing you know it’ll be Spring and then Christmas.” Akkk!!!! But … time has flown again and I’m running out of time to let you know about an event occuring this Saturday in the downtown area. It’s called The Art of Chocolate and it happens on Saturday, Feb 6th. The event starts at noon and goes until 6pm. Come by Harbor Quilt or any participating merchant and pick up a passport. We give you a stamp, you check out the goodies in the store, munch a few yummies (all the shops will have chocolate yummies for you to sample) and then you go around to the other stores collecting stamps, looking at their goodies for Valentine’s Day, eat their chocolate goodies and have fun. Hopefully, you will find something special for your someone special. Collect enough stamps and you will be entered into a drawing for several great Valentine gifts. Come see what we have and indulge in some chocolate treats made special just for you.

I’ve also wanted to show you what we see all the time. Customers come in and show us the quilts they make and over a period of time we see the same quilts but made with different materials that make it look very different. Here is one of those instances. To the left is a photo of a quilt made by Christina from the shop and the other is by Catherine Clark, one of our customers. The pattern is called Crazy Rays by Buggy Barn and I wanted to show how the same pattern can be made to look different. Christina made hers in bright, vivid colors and Catherine’s is in muted homey colors. It’s always fun to see what you ladies make. It also helps us to find new patterns to carry. This isn’t a pattern that we carry but I think it soon will be.

We always look forward to seeing what you are making. I don’t get alot of time to work on my own projects so I really enjoy seeing your projects. Come in and give us a show and tell anytime.

Clothworks has released Laurel Burch’s new line called Dancing Horses. It has a panel featuring horses in blocks, which you can cut up into separate blocks or use whole, as shown in the photo right. The coordinates include more horses and several wonderful blenders in blues and browns. This time we got the line in the earthtones (blue, brown, black and grey with metalic highlights) for a different look.

And Valentines Day will be here be for you know it. Be sure to come in and check out another of the new fabric lines that we have added to the front of the store.

It’s called Cherie from Clothworks. With 9 fabrics to choose from, you can make a fun, whimsical quilt and matching pillowcases that will delight the young and young at heart.

Welcome to Harbor Quilt, inc’s new blog.

I want to create a place that you can come to find out what is happening at Harbor Quilt, inc without intruding into your lives any more than to which you would want. Here, you can subscribe to my blog to get the most recent update of what is happening at the store. Since the first of the year we have been rearranging the store to freshen the look. We’ve got new fabrics in and lots of new books. I want to be able to show you the new fabrics, kits and products and let you know more about the happening s going on in the store and the community.
